Yes, it’s possible to wild camp for free in Munich, during Oktoberfest!!!

Oktoberfest 2015
I have to admit that before we got to munich, we were really nervous. It was the beginning of our European adventure and we haven’t camped in major city’s yet. Today, a year later and still on the road, i can say for a fact – you can wild park anywhere! To read more about us check out our post “about Kfir & Ashlee“.
After you are done reading about this amazing parking tip, check out our blog post for more great Oktoberfest tips (coming soon).
All over the internet i was reading about how not to camp in Munich, how the police give you fines, how you can get towed and how there are “no camping” signs everywhere.
Ignore all of that, but let’s align our expectations. Around the “Theresienwiese” (the area where the festival is being held) you will find “no camping” signs everywhere. But to expect to camp a block away from the festival is like to expect to camp in front of the Colosseum in Rome.
All the camping grounds are going to be expensive and packed (!!!) with hundreds and thousands of people, and you will have to take a bus\metro from there to the Weisn.
So where do you camp for free? A short trem+metro ride away from the festival, in a CASTLE with free drinking water, free WIFI and a great garden!

Schloss Nymphenburg – The best wild camping spot in Munich
Schloss Nymphenburg – build in 1675 it is a Baroque palace that use to be the summer house of the bavarian rulers. It has a gigantic garden behind it and after 4 visits to munich, we still haven’t uncovered every corner. Ohh, and they have free Wifi! Take a seat on a bench close to the main building, and you will have great reception. All of you campers with Wifi antennas on you campers should have no problem picking up a signal from the parking lot.
What to expect when parking there?
It is a safe quiet place, that only fills up on people and cars on weekend mornings. I advice you to come at night, and you will have no problem finding a great parking spot. We camped here for a week during oktoberfest (and for several days on 3 other occasions) and nobody said anything, no tickets were issued and all was well! A local camper explained to us that it is completely legal and safe, so we weren’t even hiding from anyone.
You are most likely to see a few German campers there during Oktoberfest.

In order to get to the Weisn from here you can walk out the castle and take trem number 51 to “Laimer Platz” and from there U-bahn U5 to “Schwanthalerhöhe”. This journey will take 30-40 min.

Free, safe, beautiful, free wifi, free water and a short ride from the weisn – Can you ask for more??
